SPB’s June Update

Ah!  Summer on Popponesset Bay – nothing quite like it!  A wonderful time of year to enjoy the surf, the sand, the birds (though they do start singing a bit early in the morning for me), and all this gorgeous area offers.  

Save Popponesset Bay (SPB) remains busy with a variety of projects to maintain The Spit, protect the birds, and keep our various channels and waterways operating properly and safely.  While the Longer, Wider, Deeper restoration project has been completed, SPB has a very full agenda for this season and months ahead.  Our work is never done, as we focus on making The Spit and The Bay ever better!

To better understand our efforts, here is our plan for this year:

-       Provide ongoing security for The Spit (reminder, no dogs please, no alcohol, no fires, and please avoid fenced areas where plovers and terns may be nesting)

-       Plant additional sea grass to help sustain our dunes along The Spit

-       Annual dredging to maintain the various channels in and out of Popponesset Bay and use the dredged sand to sustain our newly restored Spit

-       Working with DEP and other local and state officials to secure appropriate permitting for dredging and related activities

These efforts are paid for by SPB, and we rely on your generosity to help us meet these expenses.  With increased costs for any and all services, SPB requires an ongoing/annual budget of at least $300,000 for the above services.  In addition, we are working diligently at building a small fund for any unexpected needs (storm damage, etc.) of an additional $100,000.  LWD was a very successful capital effort.  We still need your annual support!  Please consider making a gift by clicking here: Donate — Save Popponesset Bay
