A huge thank you to the more than 230 guests who joined us this past Friday night for Save Popponesset Bay’s “Toast to the Coast” gala, and made it such a phenomenal success! We welcomed 43 new members of our community who joined us for the first time, and a terrific number of supporters under 30 who showed up to build the next generation of support for SPB!

Together we toasted our twelve-year journey ending with SPB’s successful completion of the Longer, Wider, Deeper Coastal Restoration Project in great style-lots of fun, food, drinks, live music, a couple of speeches, new merch, and a packed dance floor! During the evening Bob Hughes, long-time SPB Board member, shared a special thank you to ALL OF OUR DONORS who collectively have given over $7M dollars to SPB over the past several years. Without your support, there would be no Spit, no Longer, Wider, Deeper channel, no birds, not much family fun. Bob also gave a well-deserved thank you to our outgoing President, Caroline Malloy, who has captained our ship through some troubled waters, overcame adversity on several occasions and brought LWD to reality. We wish Caroline all the best on her future endeavors and owe her much gratitude for her leadership.

Caroline gave a shout out to the many years of volunteerism by outgoing Board members Kathy Cramer and Marlene Perkins. Both Kathy and Marlene have been staunch supporters of SPB for well over a decade. Their commitment to SPB has been tremendous. John Malloy was also acknowledged for his work as a tireless volunteer over the last twelve plus years to act as our project manager for LWD, working with many state, county and town officials, as well as excavation companies, dredgers, all in an effort to bring the project to completion. We also thank Board members Eric Brandt, Bob Hughes, Mike Moskowitz and Margie Ross Decter. as they say, it takes a village and we give special recognition to our past Board member Mike Oleksak as well as dedicated volunteers Joan Malloy and Anne Wallis for their contributions in making Longer, Wider, Deeper a success.

SPB is a 501c3 non-profit and is run by an all-volunteer Board and dedicated community volunteers. As we shared earlier this summer, SPB continues to work on enhancing and sustaining our ecosystem to make the Spit and Bay sustainable for generations to come. As Caroline shared in her speech, we are always in search of new volunteers and are hoping that you have been inspired and would like to join our team. Just this past week, we secured permits for dredging the inner channel between Popponesset Island and the Spit. And this Fall we anticipate planting new grass on the dunes, to help prevent erosion. Mother nature never sleeps, nor does SPB!
