Spring 2025 Updates

Dredging Complete:

The Town of Mashpee & Barnstable County Dredge completed the Spring 2025 dredging! This dredging effort yielded 8,538 cubic yards of sand (a bit more than usual) which was then placed onto the Spit.

This vital activity enhances maritime safety by dredging the Outer Approach Channel, while simultaneously reinforcing the Spit barrier beach to bolster coastal resilience.

Save the date for luau:

I feel summer creeping in…. save the date for our Save Popponesset Bay’s Annual Summer Fundraiser: the Longer, Wider, Deeper Luau! July 11, 2025 at the Popponesset Inn tent. VIP hour is 5-6pm and general admission at 6pm. Enjoy dinner, drinks, and hula dancing!

Coastal birds nesting:

Our coastal birds have returned to the Spit! 2 pairs of Oystercatchers have been seen foraging and engaging in territorial disputes. 7 pairs of Piping Plovers were spotted exhibiting territorial and courtship behaviors. 1 pair has begun laying eggs.

This all means that no dogs are allowed on the Spit until Labor Day to protect the coastal waterbird activity. Mass Audubon has reported dog walkers have been seen on several occasions at the site. Dog tracks have been consistently observed along the beach, some entering the fencing. Please respect the rule and encourage others you see to respect it as well. Mass Audubon has the authority to shut down the Spit if these behaviors continue.
