Permits are APPROVED: The Future is in Our Hands

The Future of Popponesset Bay Is In Our Hands
And It Starts Now

We are thrilled to share a major milestone in the fight to protect the Popponesset Spit and Bay: all final permits have been approved for the Longer Wider Deeper Restoration Project, the largest and most transformative coastal resilience effort in our community’s history!!

After over a decade of scientific studies, regulatory reviews, and agency collaboration, the project is now shovel-ready to begin construction in partnership with the Barnstable County Dredge who are committed to execute the project this September 2025!

Why it matters:
Popponesset Spit and Bay remain extremely vulnerable. This landmark project is creating sustainable infrastructure for the Spit and local waterways to fight erosion and preserve this vital ecosystem to the Town of Mashpee.

The approved project includes:

  • Up to 80,000 cubic yards of sand to rebuild the Spit’s beaches and dunes

  • Expanded Outer Channel dredging to improve navigation and provide a sustainable sand source for Spit replenishment

  • A sediment catch basin alongside a portion of the Outer Chanel to extend the channels life

  • A smart, integrated design that significantly improves the Spits resilience to storms and sea level rise

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help safeguard the Popponesset Spit & Bay for the future - and we need your help to bring it to life. With your support we will move full speed ahead!
